Problem: This former vacation cabin overlooks Las Trampas Creek and was added onto, rather poorly, several times over the years. It was in a state of neglect and disrepair when purchased by the client. The main spaces had been subdivided into small rooms. The overall circulation was very poor. Our task was to undo the damage from the past and to create a new unified look to replace the piecemeal exterior finishes. The client desired a country house look and feel.

Solution: All non-bedroom interior room divisions were removed to reveal a large central cathedral space, which then became the main living areas of the house – living, dining and kitchen. Side rooms were developed into a garden room and office. The bedrooms remained located in the two-story addition. New windows, doors and exterior cedar siding were added to improve the look and performance of the structure. The front yard was paved in brick, with discrete planters. Large decks were added at the rear, overlooking Las Trampas Creek. The overall result was a home unified by warm, natural materials that blended perfectly with the surrounding woodlands and provided the owner with the look she was after.
